Tammy Wynette's, "Stand By Your Man"
In 1968, country singer Tammy Wynette recorded her song “Stand by Your Man,” landing her at the top of the country music charts for three weeks and providing her with thousands of gullible listeners daily (Songfacts, 2017). “Stand by Your Man” depicts the mental state of the typical, obedient wife of the 1960’s; however, due to the feminist movement gaining momentum, this state of mind was not idealized by many. Rhetorically, Wynette directs her desire for women to remain stagnant in silence, hiding behind the shadows of their husbands’ moral discrepancies, towards the minds of feminist women in hopes of diffusing their desire for a change in gender roles.
